When we say Nour provides trauma-responsive support, we mean that everything we do is shaped by a deep understanding of trauma and its effects on your life. We see you, we believe you, and we work with you to make sense and meaning of your experiences.
Understanding Trauma
“Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you.” Dr Gabor Maté
Trauma is what happens when we experience very stressful, frightening, or distressing events that feel overwhelming or out of our control. It’s essentially an emotional and physical response to something terrible that happens to us, like violence, loss, abuse, or any event that feels deeply threatening or harmful.
Trauma can be a single incident or something ongoing that happens over time. What makes something traumatic isn’t just the event itself, but how much support we have at the time to navigate what happened, and how safe we were made to feel afterwards. Different people respond differently to similar events; what’s traumatic for one person may not affect another in the same way. There’s no right or wrong way to respond to trauma.
The Ripples of Trauma
Trauma doesn’t just stay in the past. It creates ripples that touch every part of your life, how you feel in your body, how you relate to others, how you see yourself, how you experience safety, how you manage emotions, and how you move through the world.
These ripples are normal responses to abnormal experiences. They’re not weaknesses or failings; they’re survival mechanisms that helped you get through something unbearable. Your body and mind did what they needed to do to keep you alive.
What Trauma-Responsive Support Looks Like
At Nour, being trauma-responsive means we create a space where healing can truly happen. This is what that looks like in practice.
We go at your pace. There’s no rushing, no pressure. Some days are harder than others, and we understand that. We’ll never push you to talk about anything before you’re ready.
We work with deep compassion. We recognise that healing isn’t linear. There will be progress and setbacks, good days and difficult days. Both are part of the journey, and we’ll be with you through all of it.
We guide you gently. We help you navigate the trauma and find what works for your own healing journey. You’re the expert on your life; we’re here to walk alongside you, not to tell you what to do.
We prioritise safety. Physical, emotional and psychological safety are at the centre of everything we do. You get to decide what feels safe for you.
We understand triggers. We know that certain situations, words or experiences can bring trauma flooding back. We work with you to understand your triggers and develop ways to manage them that work for you.
We recognise your strengths. You’ve survived something terrible. That takes enormous strength, resilience and courage. We build on that strength, not just focus on what feels broken or what hurts.
Why This Matters
Many survivors have experienced services that rushed them through their story, made them repeat their trauma over and over, didn’t understand why they couldn’t ‘just move on’, blamed them for their responses to trauma, or made them feel worse, not better.
Trauma-responsive support is different. It’s about creating a space where healing can happen, at your pace, in your way, with people who truly understand. It’s about being met with compassion rather than judgement, with patience rather than pressure.
Your Healing Journey
At Nour, we understand the ripples of trauma. We don’t expect you to be ‘fixed’ or to follow a predetermined path. We work with all of you, your pain, your strength, your culture, your faith, your identity, your hopes. We guide you with compassion as you find what healing means for you.
We believe that healing happens in relationship, in connection with others who understand. You don’t have to do this alone.
Because trauma-responsive isn’t just what we do; it’s who we are. It’s woven into every conversation, every session, every interaction. It’s how we show up for you.
