Spiritual Advocacy
Support that meets you where you are
Spiritual abuse is when religion or faith is used as a tool of control, manipulation or oppression. It’s when the things that should bring you peace and connection are twisted into weapons to keep you trapped, silent, or compliant.
Maybe you’ve been told that Islam (or your faith) requires you to accept abuse. Perhaps you’ve heard that having sabr (patience) means suffering in silence. You might have been warned that speaking out will send you to hell, or that leaving is unforgivable. Maybe religious teachings have been twisted to justify control, or you’ve been cut off from your religious community.
Our Spiritual Advocacy service is here to help you reclaim your faith, find clarity, and understand the truth, that your faith does not condone abuse.
Our Spiritual Advocacy service is run by Alimas, women qualified in Islamic theology who understand both faith and the dynamics of abuse. This service is a place of solace for survivors from the Muslim community, where we work to rewrite harmful narratives in your life.
Frequently Asked Questions
About the Service
Is this really free?
Yes, completely free. We believe money shouldn't be a barrier to getting help.
How long will I wait?
Waiting times vary depending on demand. We'll be honest about timing when you first get in touch.
Can I get support if English isn't my first language?
Let us know what language you are most comfortable in and we will see if we can provide support in your chosen language. Currently we can offer support in English, Sylheti and Urdu.
Will you understand my cultural background?
Yes. Our Alimas understand the intersection of faith and culture deeply, and they also understand the dynamics of abuse. You won't need to spend time explaining, we get it.
Is it confidential?
Yes, with very limited exceptions (if there's immediate risk to you or someone else). We'll explain this clearly when you first contact us.
About Spiritual Advocacy
I'm not sure if what I experienced is spiritual abuse. Can I still reach out?
Yes. If you're questioning whether faith was used to control or harm you, that's enough reason to reach out. We can talk it through together.
Will you try to convince me to stay in or leave my marriage?
No. We provide information about what Islam says, but decisions are always yours. We're here to help you understand your options, not to tell you what to do
I'm not Muslim, can you still help me?
Our Alimas have specialist expertise in Islamic contexts, but we support anyone experiencing spiritual abuse. If you're from another faith tradition, we can help you find appropriate religious support and resources.
What if I'm not religious anymore after the abuse?
That's completely understandable and valid. We support people wherever they are in their relationship with faith, whether you're holding on, letting go, or somewhere in between.
Can you connect me with an imam or religious scholar?
Yes, if that would be helpful. We can connect you with knowledgeable, supportive religious leaders who understand abuse and can provide additional guidance.
Will you tell my family or community about what I've shared?
No. Everything is confidential, with very limited exceptions (if there's immediate risk to you or someone else). Your safety and privacy are paramount.
I'm worried about being judged for leaving or considering leaving.
You won't be judged here. Our advocates understand the complexity of these situations and the courage it takes to prioritise your safety.
Can I access this alongside counselling?
Yes. Many clients benefit from both spiritual advocacy and counselling. We can coordinate to provide joined-up support.
